The economic sustainability of the estate relied on selling grapes for Douro wines and port.
The fluctuations and fall in the price per kg of grapes throughout the 1990s saw to it that the end product leaving the property would be bottled wine, not grapes, as it had been up to then.

The wine-making unit was built from scratch in 2003, using the best technology available.
On 21 September 2003 the first grapes entered it and wine-making on the Brites Aguiar estate began.
